Memorising Surah does not have to rely on mental repetition alone. For young learners, reading, writing and hands-on activities can make revision more meaningful and engaging.
One simple activity is “Read and Re-Arrange the Surah.”
In this activity, the verses of a familiar Surah are presented separately. Children read each verse and work out the correct sequence. The attached resource uses Surah An-Naas, with its verses placed in separate boxes for children to read and re-arrange. This turns memorisation revision into a little puzzle!
🧩 Why is this useful?
The activity encourages children to:
👀 Recognise the verses visually
📖 Read the Arabic text
🧠 Recall the correct sequence
✋ Learn through hands-on manipulation
🗣️ Reinforce their memorisation through recitation
Instead of simply asking children to recite the Surah repeatedly, we give them another way to retrieve and demonstrate what they already know.
🎒 Preparing for Primary 1
This is also a useful way to introduce children to learning formats they may encounter in Primary 1, where they may need to read, recognise, sequence and respond to written material.
Memorisation is important — but so is being able to recognise what has been memorised.
So, the next time you revise a Surah, try something different:
Read. Mix. Re-arrange. Recite.
Learning can be hands-on too. 🌱
